BTW: I agree with Recky in that I also never knew that there sere salmon in Lake Michigan. I also was under the impression that salmon only existed pretty much out in the West and NorthWest.
*Groans* Reck, I think they're Atlantic Salmon. A little different from the Alaskan Salmon, and Salmon from the Northwest that we're used to. Atlantic Salmon is generally "good eatin'" though I don't know about salmon from Lake Michigan. Chicago's on Lake Michigan doncha know.
Hi..well I've been in Indiana so I didn't see these till this morning. Asked Don for some info regarding the fish, and this is what he sent me. It should clear up any rumors about illegal Salmon. ;)
"The salmon is a King Salmon, also called Chinook. It is the same species as they have in the ocean. They started planting salmon in the Great Lakes back in the '60's.
That said, the fish don't grow as large as ocean fish, and up in Alaska the Chinook salmon has unique genetics that let it grow really big. 75 lb kings are not unheard of. I caught a 61 pounder when I was up there. The salmon down here average about 15-17 pounds as a 3 year fish (the age when they come back to the river to spawn). A fish over 20 pounds is a really good fish.
There are also Coho (Silver), Pink, and Atlantic salmon in the Great Lakes. In Alaska, they also have Coho, Pinks, and Sockeye (Red) salmon. No Atlantics in Alaska, though . :)"

Maybe the salmon are there illegally and Mich is fish sanctuary state. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "wetback".
