I saw something on MSNBC the other night that made my eyes roll. (I know..go figure.) It was an advert for their coverage of Obama's inauguration on the 20th. It was very dramatic, of course, but what got to me is that it said something like, 'people will forever ask...where were you?' You know, 'where were you when Kennedy was shot?'...'where were you on 9/11?'. D didn't agree with my protest, as he correctly sees it as a very historical event.
The thing is...it's SCHEDULED. We pretty much know where we're gonna be. Most of us will watch it on t.v., some will be watchin Whale Rider. (just kiddin.) But you get my point. The 'where were you whens' should be for events that are unexpected, not on the calender.

Ok, had me rollin & laughin w/ the WR remark.
So, no inauguration Party at the Olski's that nite? Come on, this is bigger than the Super Bowl! Surely you've purchased some a those Obama coins as seen on tv?
I recall Clinstone's inag; it was blown all outta proportion as well. Yes, it's historic that a non-wht man is gonna be prez, but it's not the end-all beat-all event of our lifetime. I wanna give BO a fair chance, but all this hype rubs me the wrong way.
That's exactly my problem. Whenever someONE or someTHING is getting too much hype, I run screaming the other direction.
Oh we'll be watchin...
I passed on the Obama coins and opted for the commemorative plate so that the whole family could sit around it at the table in utter admiration.
(Have you SEEN that stupid ad?)
R/N: This is similar to discussions we've had..thought you might find it interesting. (morals and where they come from)

Seen it. Hadn't bought yet tho; still waitin for my Bush plates.
Ha, I hate to disappoint you, but they may be lost in the mail. You really should "act now", cuz they'll throw in the plate stand. Actually, my sil told me there are errors on the plate. Can't remember what she said they were, but you can be she's right! Cuz she knows ALL things BO!
Is the error "place of birth"?
Just watched the Seinfeld where George has the big coat; very funny.
You have to get your plates soon, because they are in limited supply and they will NEVER make them again. I'm thinking...that's a good thing. I seriously doubt I'll watch the coronation. I think I'd rather be waterboarded. Let me know if he talks about the Israel/Gaza thing during his speech. One thing he's got going for himself though, he's sure to be the greatest 44th president in US history.
Mornin.
Was lookin at ch 4 & apparently yall'r gonna have some reasonable temps and steady (tho lite) snow for awhile; atlaest accordin to Chuck Gaidica and the "Best Fricken Weather Coverage Possible".
Ha! That made me laugh..wouldn't life be more fun if that slogan could actually be possible? That's what Chuck said, eh? Well, we had some snow this morning, so the lawn's turning white again. And the temp is around 30, so that's nice. I actually have the window open right now. Sometimes the firewood leaves a heavy smell in the air. It's not too bad, but the fresh air feels good. Now I have to check out channel 4 outta curiosity...
ARG. My vacuum's a dead soldier. I've had the dang thing repaired twice already..3 strikes and you're out. Looks like I know how I'm spendin that Target gift card from Christmas.
Vacuums never last, do they? We finally gave up on em (course only carpeted in bd rms here) and use a shop vac. Shop vacs last.
Yes, tune into to Chuck, 11pm your time for the most up to date, reliable, kick *ss weather available.
No, they don't. I actually coughed up some dough for this puppy, too. It's the limosines of vacuums..thought maybe you get what you pay for. Not so much. Well we're mostly carpet, so I'll get another one...tho a cheaper one so it won't hurt so much when it breaks. I spent much of the afternoon doing what any self-respecting stay at home mom would do...reading vacuum reviews. Joy.
Now I can't wait till 11:00!
Never did ask if yall found a Christmas service? We're startn our wed nite dealio again tonite. Hopin we're movin on from Nehemiah to somethin alittle more excitin..like...Jeremiah.
Ah yes the Ia brothers.
No, never did.
I'm currently really annoyed with "new math". What was wrong with the old math? Ever heard of "partial quotient method"? Well, it's a really dumb way to do long division. And what's with the multitude of different strategies to learn their multiplication facts? It's called rote memory. You jam it in there over and over till it's memorized. Geez, I'm an ornerny ol man.
That shoulda been Miah brothers.
Yep, came across that this yr when youngest told me the way i was showin hewr to do mult was "old school" and they now do "new school" math; which to me seems like guessin.
I think if you take a look back to the rote method grades were alot better. When I met w/ her teacher earlier this yr she said they didn't work on learnin their mult factors last yr cause of TAKS test prep. Sounded like a cop-out to me.
You should change the system from the inside.
Let me guess, you still did Nehemiah.
Well, the theory is that all kids learn differently and they need a variety of methods from which to choose, that matches best the way they learn. I get that. But it seems to me that some things like X facts, just need to be memorized.
Here's an example, and then I"ll let it go...one strategy for 9s is that you bump it up to 10 and minus the other number once. Like if the problem is 9x4, you think "well, I know 10x4 is 40, so 4 less than that". That's fine if you need to figure it out, but c'mon. How bout sayin the problem and answer 10 times every day for 3 days. I think you'll have it. And really that strategy confuses the heck outta me when I try to use it. You shoulda seen how long it took me to type this! :)
Stop pushin me back to work.
And I don't really want to watch Hannity by himself. Can't they find some other liberal sidekick for him? Gads. It's gonna be one conservative bigmouth after another. Don't get me wrong, I love me a conservative bigmouth, but there is such a thing as 'too much of a good thing'.
What happened to Colmes? Really, I don't know how you can watch Fox?
No Nehemiah tonite. Instead we watched 1/2 a "Expelled". I gathered that Chuck & I were the only ones to have previously seen it. You should rent it.
Opps...forgot..
Seriously, fixin to watch it.
Colmes is on through the rest of the week, then it's solo time. Why, you've got somethin against the network?
No, I never did see that movie. Ahhh, well the website needs updating then.
Linda,
About the 'new math' thing. I'm pretty much for teaching kids whatever way suits them. I think 'back in the day', kids didn't have nearly as many neurological disorders as they do today, and the ones who did have neurological disorders got their disorders 'disciplined' out of them. Your 9 X 4 analogy though, I do that. No one ever taught it to me though, I just figured it out. I would have teachers get mad at me because I finished stuff so fast, got them all (or at least mostly right) and didn't use scratch paper. I would get incredulous looks when I'd say; "I did it in my head."
Expelled huh? Maybe I'll try to pick that up this weekend. Carmen has drill this weekend, and they're going to play soldier over at Camp Bullis, so I'll be flying solo friday and saturday nights. I need to go to the video store anyway since we've had 'The Nativity Story' for about two weeks.
Reck,
By the way, we're going to be in SA MLK weekend. We need to find another babysitter since the one we had can't watch the kids anymore, but we should be in SA thursday evening through monday morning. Monday, the Austin and SA churches will be doing something in the community in assn. with the MLK march. Other than monday we're trying to lay low, but I'm thinkin' a trip to Florio's wouldn't be out of the question.
A trip to Florio's you say? We're there! Let me know what day/evenin. Glad yall will be in town for the Holiday March.
Re: Fox.
I sometimes watch O'Reilly. Still haven't caught Beck. Hannity is too partisan for my taste, as is Colmes. My recent take on Fox is they're too tabloid.
I mostly watch CNN if I need a news fix. In like Anderson Cooper alot and will watch your boy Matthews until I feel my head about to explode. For news it's mostly the net for me and opinion stuff I get on the radio or blogs. National review on-line is a good web site for serious conservative thinkers; and of course TH.
~sigh~ I'm not sure I need to comment on this, but I hate the feeling of being misunderstood.
N, yes, you need to teach kids the way it suits them. That realization is one of the advances teaching has made over the years. My rants are usually meant to be satire, based on a thread of serious opinion. Especially the 'back in the day' ones. Don't think I'm out there tryin to shove a square peg into a round hole because it suits ME and not the kid.
That bein said, some of these strategies ARE just bizarre. Unless someone needs the visual, drawing a matrix to do division just seems like a big waste of time. And the percentage of kids who actually NEED that matrix for it to make sense has to be small. Course we'd know more about who needs what if the classroom sizes were smaller, but that's a whole other thing!
R,
Beck's not on yet..he starts on the 19th. Bring on the tabloidy! I think straight news would get too boring for me..I like a little sensationalism. Not too much, just a little.
Hannity's obnoxious and a one trick pony. You coulda played a drinking game w/ how much he said Ayers during the campaign. I think Colmes gives him some one liner zingers that are really funny. I actually get the feeling that O'Reilly's a pretty decent guy. I like his radio more than the tv. Same with GB. (Mind you I'm not really sittin there starin at the tv when any of this stuff's on.)
I used to tune into Wolf Blitzer till I realized I was gettin my news from a robot. I swear, do you get ANY kind of feeling about that guy? Can you tell if he's funny? Kind? Smart even? Of course he is, but can you tell?
I like AC, too. What's not to like really. And those eyes in High Def..hello! I do like the Matthews, but he'll have to get pushed to 7:00 when GB starts.
Don't get too hot under the collar for AC, from what I understand he.. uh...plays for the other team.
Yes, give me reading, writing and arithmetic; so much that it makes me sick.
Thanks for listin the morals thread. Very interestn indeed.
You should ck out Jack's blog.
Here's an old, brief, but interesting convo as well. I didn't think the post was as much as the comments were tho. See what you think. I thought the idea of being "agnostic about certain things" we don't know, was a pretty good one.
http://townhall.com/youropinion/comments.aspx?g=cf45a883-efaf-4b70-8266-b74333b9a4cd
Yeah he does play for the other team, but he's still got some eyes on him.
I was just out w/ my mom and I was saying how nice it was today. Turns out the wind chill is 14. See how warped we get in the winter months?
It is a nice day today; 80 right now. Tho were gettin a winter blast this weekend, w/ highs around 60 :)
I'll ck it out.
Oh to feel 77 right now. I'd be sittin on the porch lookin at the stars... We don't see the winter constellations much cuz we're so dang cold. Do you just stand outside in your shorts lookin at Orion's Belt? I never thought of that.
Our weather says we'll range from 0-23, not including wind ch. for the next 9 days. Uncool. (ok, very cool, but you know what I'm sayin.)
You woulda loved Matthews tnite. Took some time out for his favorite pasttime..pickin on Palin. Cuz you know, what she thought about her interview w/ Katie Couric is so relevant.
Leno last night in his monologue:
'..so the NFL playoff season has started...or as the Detroit Lions call it--"fantasy football".
har har har har har har har har!
Watchn the Nat Champ gm? 7 to 7 at the half.
Linda,
Did I go off on one of my very occasional, slightly opinionated tangents again? My bad. ;)
Seriously though, the problem we have with mainstream education is that it doesn't meet the needs of all of the kids. Honestly though, they can't. With 25 kids and one teacher, you have to do the best you can. If that means you teach in a way that 20 of the kids succeed, 2 kids do OK, 2 scrape by and one doesn't make it, then honestly, you've done a good job. (statistically speaking at least) The system, our society and too many parents who think it's someone else's job to raise their kids have made it that way. I learned the old fashioned way, and I think it suits the majority of kids, but I know that there are a whole lot of really smart kids who don't fit in society's box. I think some of the alternative ways of teaching are good for reaching some kids, and some of them are just plain ridiculous. I just think sometimes we need to *OPEN OUR MINDS* ;)
AC's playing for the other team? REALLY?
I was hoping it'd be 42-0 Florida at the half. HOOK 'EM GATORS, OU SUCKS!!!
We were watchin it at the half, and I'm watchin it now...but I'll leave it to you and N, as I've no idea why this is important in any way. Um....go Lions??
Go Gators! National Champs!! I hate OU.
Did you notice what was painted on Tebow's (Florida's QB) face....that's right, John 3:16.
Oh...yes N. Queer as a three dollar bill.
What's with Texas and Oklahoma? I don't think I've ever heard a kind word spoken about the state from you guys. I woulda thought the proximity would make you partners in crime.
Was it John 3:16 or Phil 4:13?
Then again, maybe he puts different scriptures for each game.
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13
I don't have a problem with the state of Oklahoma. I don't have a problem with Oklahoma State University. It's just OU. Kinda the way Michigan and Ohio State feel about each other, but I think a little worse. In general, there is hatred for the Sooners, and we pretty much assume that if something is done backwards, it was done by an Aggie.
I think the bottom line is, in recent years the Horns and Sooners have been really good, and the Sooners somehow end up on top most of the time, even when Texas wins the Red River Shootout.
Texas 45, Oklahoma 35
The Good: Texas
The Bad: Oklahoma
The Ugly: Texas A&M
The Okies are a good conservative state, but like Nest said, OU bites. But, w/ they're trouncin of TTech they deserved to go to the B12 title gm and hence the Nat Championship; tho I think it shoulda been USC & Florida. Course there was a strong argument for the tea-sippers as well.
We need a playoff system in college football, imo.
One missed tackle in Lubbock kept UT out of the championship game. Oh well, Texas is way ahead of schedule. They weren't supposed to be as good as they were this year. Next year we play the Red Raiders in Austin.
You know what I hear when I read your posts about college football?
The teacher in Charlie Brown.
Linda,
I hear ya. It reminds me a that year The Coo..wah wah wah. Wah wah, wah wah wah wah haftime when wah wah wah wah. Wah fourth down wah wah wah wah. Wah wah wah waaaah wah wah game.
:)
Who wants to come shovel the drivewaaay?...raise your hand!
Every time I consider moving back to the Northeast I remember how much my back used to hurt after shoveling the driveway. Why did we have such a long driveway anyway?
An excellent question. I have to say though..moving further away from the city, I care much less about the shoveling. It was always a 'the neighbors already did it' kinda thing. I used to be out there at 11pm shoveling mine and helping the neighbors do theirs. Now I'm like, 'eh..who really cares?' Ok, I still do it, but I don't feel the pressure to get it done as soon as it falls.
What is "shoveling snow"?
So, the boy rented EA Sports College Football 2009 for the PS3 and then left to go to a friends and left it here and so now my weekend is pretty much set. Incredibly fun!
Bonus!
You should be watchin a movie, tho...just sayin.
I recommend Ironman for you movie enjoyment this weekend. ;)
Actually Stan asked about "Memory Of The Camps" so i posted a link at Nest's and then watched it.
Been a long while since I've seen it. Everyone should see this film but dang, it's tough.
gna
Nestor! How could you?!
Beautiful snow comin down here. Supposed to get 4-6 I think.
Weather permitting we're thinkin about a movie in an actual THEATRE tonight! I know. I guess it's this place where a bunch of people go and the screen's really big, and they pop the popcorn FOR you. I don't think they have a bunch of microwaves lined up, so I'll be interested to see how they get the popcorn to pop.
It's amazing how they do it. You take a little oil, a heating source and popcorn kernels and, VOILA! Popcorn, minus the radiation and butter flavored chemicals.
What movie are you planning to see? I'd say Marley and Me is really good, but we were disappointed that we brought the kids along. Maybe I've already said that though. But I thought it was a really good movie, that should have been PG-13, or should have had a couple of scenes cut out.
That's funny..my sil was thinkin about takin the boys w/ her to see M&Me, and I poo pooed it. I thought it might have some grown up parts in it, tho you're never sure. I'm thinkin I'll rent it.
D wants to see Valkyrie. (sp?) That movie about the assasination plot against Hitler. (Again w/ Nazi Germany...)
I'd like to see Slumdog Millionaire (watch the Oscar noms for it..I'm guessin it'll get a lot), or The Amazing Case of Benjamin Button, or Doubt, or Rachel's Wedding (tho I'll see that alone sometime), or The Reader. I'd like to see Frost/Nixon, but it's not around here. I'll let D pick, tho. Cuz it's the kind of girl I am. :)
Sorry.."Curious" Case of Benjamin Button.
My neighbor just sent me this..thought it was a good chuckle. Caller from Austin to Ellen DeGeneres.
http://www.boreme.com:80/boreme/funny-2007/ellen-gladys-hardy-p1.php?emf=1
Gladys was hysterical!
She was a trip.
"I believe in Jesus but I still sip whiskey" or somethin like that. The icicle thing was good too.
Very funny!
Ok...this is IT! FOR REAL!!
Gonna watch it NOW!
It better be good.
Stop it. I can't take the pressure. Just put me out of my misery for goodness sake. And remind me never to recommend a movie to you again.
"I love Jesus, but I drink a little". Gladys
Shwoo!
Glad that monkeys off my back.
Seriously tho, I actually thought it was pretty good. The ol grandfather was kinda a jerk; but I understand that he was blinded (sorta a chauvinistic thing I'm guessn).
Fine actin, the girl that played Pia was real good. Thought for sure she was dead at the end.
Was kinda expectin a good gal vs bad boy thing between her and the (smokin after school kid) especially when his gansta dad showed up. Tho, maybe her beatin him at the stick thing was it. The general feelin of the movie for me tho was melomcoly (there's that word again). Didn't miss the spiritual undertones.
One thing, they're chantin reminded me of the tank fish in
Nemo durin the initiation :)
One question tho: did the whales come to save (regenerate) them; vice versa/or was it a combo thing?
All in all I give it a solid 6.
Just wait till I send you one now. Ohhh...I'm sendin.
Uh...that word would actually be melancholy.
Note to self...sp ck the big words.
I think it was a combo thing.
Yes, her name is Keisha Castle-Hughes I think. If I remember right, she was 13 when she did it, and she was nominated for an Oscar for it. It was a pretty big deal cuz she was so young. I thought she was brilliant. I cry everytime I see the scene of her in the school performance, cryin and her g-pas not there. I thought she was gonna die, too.
It just makes me feel thoughtful. It's so quiet and understated and spiritual, I guess it makes me feel good. I liked it more the more times I've watched it actually.
ok, I won't push my luck.
"He's just a BOY!" starfish in Nemo
See, you don't have to actually SEND one, cuz I'LL rent a recommendation. Unless it's that one..Passion of the Christ, was it? We talked about it a long time ago, and I said I didn't want to see it. I still won't see it.
You'll see it if I send it. Actually, that'd be too obvious a one to send. Gonna have to think about it for awhile and make sure it's a total guy flick.
Yes, her performance in that scene was very movin.
Not surprised she got a nom for her role.
Bossy.
Certainly you're not implying that my sug was a chick flick. It's not, you just have to a compassionate bone in your body to appreciate it, that's all. That bone could be the stapes, and you'd be fine.
I think that girl played Mary in 'The Nativity Story' as well. 'The Nativity Story' was good, but I disagreed with 'Mary's' attitude when she was told she'd be marrying Joseph. The bible doesn't say anything regarding this, and given her actions throughout the bible, and the fact that in their culture, marriages were arranged, I think she would have been OK marrying Joseph. He turned out to be a good man anyway, not stoning her and all.
Regarding 'The Passion'. It is an incredible movie, but it doesn't delve into why Jesus went through what he went through. That's the key. But once you understand why Jesus had to be sacrificed, and you see in excruciating detail what he went through, it puts sin in a whole new perspective.
Yes, N, that was her. I remember that now.
I'll be darn, that was her.
You should definitely watch it now L.
Honestly, it's such a fine film (regardless of the topic) and the actin is so superb that you should see it. It's a Top 10er for me.
You may be right, but I dunno. I have a thing about it. Can't explain it.
W/your interest & knowledge of movies I think your doin yourself an injustice by not seein it. It's an incredible film.
Pullin out all the stops w/ "injustice". I feel a bit like I've been slapped across the face with a leather glove. Oh I know you're not challenging me...but you kinda are. Appealing to my movie going nature, you are.
Havic!
:)
