All in all it was a pretty uneventful New Year. The fishing was bad, and it was bitter cold. I did read GB's book, which was a goal I had for the weekend. Games consisted of tag, Jenga, Chess, Sequence, and Scene It. Here's some pics... This is how you know you've got your hoodie on backwards. Fox and Geese tag w/ Aunt T. (You have to stay on the paths.)
Minus 4 POINT 6. We're not actually in the arctic circle ya know. Tho I saw The Golden Compass today and they were talkin about "the north..where it is cold and dark". Yep, that just about covers it!
Well, they can play better than I can which isn't saying anything cuz I don't play. They're still struggling with seeing the big picture, tho. Pretty obsessed about losing their pawns still.
Like you'd know anything about minus temps being bearable! :)
I have no idea what a redbox is. I'm assuming you drop movies in it to return them to whomever it is you rent them. But how can they "not work"? They're not set up like a mailbox? Shoot, that reminds me..I've got some overdue ones, too.
Redbox is cool (when workin). We just recently started rentn from it. Movies for a buck (just have em back by 9pm the next day) or it's an additional back a day.And they're first run flicks just like BB.these things are poppin up everywhere.
My newest kick is to be tighter than I've ever been. So, lookin for any and every way to save money. Instituted several new family rules such as no drink or snacks to be purchased when we're goin to every day places. You want a drink or snack, take it w/ you. Got sick a seein half drank cokes in the car. Been alot a grumblin on this one so far but I'm stickin to my guns.
Biggest one "could" be the no smokin thingy. I know..I know, but we're tryn. Down to 16 a day and gonna keep weenin. S too.
I've been doin that a little, too. Could do a lot more, I know. B loves to buy lunch at school, but I've reigned him in, etc. It's easier when they're littler I'd guess. W/ the economic slowdown to hit here eventually, good to make some preemptive strikes. Plus, if we're ever gonna reach some a the goals we've set, the money's gotta come from somewhere, eh?
D's dreading going back to work. Gotta lay off more people. And auto is shut down the whole month of Jan. Doh! I love MI. But I swear if I thought the house would sell, and if the market was seemingly better somewhere else, I'd consider goin for it. Course there's probably people all over saying that.
Meh. I'm takin your 'what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger' idea. No, I know you never actually said that, but I'm thinkin you would.
I'm tryin to find a summer camp for T. He really wants to go, but I don't think they do the overnight thing until they're a little older. He's a weird little dude. He wants to go alone. Says he'll just meet people there. (But, he can be a total loner, so I think that's his cover.) I'm hesitant about overnight, but I think he'd thrive in that sort of thing. He's one of those that are totally happy being different than other kids and doing his own thing. Sorta hard to explain it, but I think it would be good for him. Your kids ever do that?
Had to write the date for the first time this year. ALmost tripped me up, but I pulled out the 9. The good thing is that as you're writing the eight, you can quickly make it a nine before you pass the starting point at the top, when you start to loop around. Much less obvious a cover-up for --omgosh. I just saw the first GB add on Fox for his new show. I think I love him.
Hey, ya gotta start now for summer stuff. I've lost out that way before. Just registered B for baseball this spring. I know...cuttin back..but I pulled T from piano and me from Choi, so that's somethin.
D used to go to farm camp which I enjoy teasing him unmercilessly for. He thinks it was just some farmer guy that wanted help around the place and made em do all the work. I did the traditional live in canvas tents, "mess hall" meals, hiking, campsongs, archery, etc. camp two years for a week each. 3rd and 4th grade. I was horribly homesick, but lookin back it's sort of a good challenge. And everyone's pretty much miserable, so there was the comeradery. (don't spell check me.)
Last year I was thinkin NO WAY on the overnight, but I'm thinkin he's gettin old enough, but I hear ya. There's that line between coddling and lettin em experience stuff. But it's scary.
Cow camp, eh? Yeah, that's pretty much askin for it.
Sorry to hear bout the Choi. Might come in handy when things go to hell; ya know, before the Mormons take over. Maybe you can mention Beck then. Leave out the "lovin him" part tho. Mormon's don't go for the multiple marriage thing anymore.
omg..you're such a jerk. Mail it back. Really, I'll find SOMEONE who'll watch it. (No, I don't know who. But surely someone will.) Enjoy Batman..actually I'm interested in what you guys think.
What a HUGE surprise! The Dark Knight was really, really good. And this comes from someone who's not a Batman fan. The twists were surprisin. The Joker was awesome. Chaos indeed. Long movie, but I coulda watched more. Hope there's a another w/ the same cast. Didn't recognize the actor who played Batman but he was good. I understand why it's been mentioned for Acdmy awards.
WR is next. Tho, gonna miss my little "not ever gonna watch it" gm :)
The character who played Batman is Christian Bale. He's a pretty solid actor. He was in the Shaft remake though he played a dirtbag in that movie. I've heard he was really good in the movie, "The Machinist". I think he plays some psycho guy and he had to lose a ton of weight for it. The other movie I've seen him in is "Newsies", a musical about the newspaper boys in the late 1800's, early 1900's who took on Joseph Pulitzer, or was it Hearst? One of those muckrakers anyway. Plus my fave president makes an appearance in it.
Plus Christian Bale is originally from...wait for it.....Wales.
Glenn's new book is really good. Even if you don't believe in God or Christmas, you can get something out of it. But you can check out his new website, faceyourstorm.com to get an idea of the main message of the book. His point in the book is that we all face storms in life, and they don't go away until we face them.
Have you checked out Financial Peace University? Our church is having a class again soon. A lot of people swear by it. From what I've seen, I think it's really good, but I disagree with some of the things in it. However, it has lots of good information, ideas of ways to save, invest and get rid of debt, and the ideas are founded on biblical principles. I just get concerned that some of the people who come out of the class are preaching the "Gospel according to Dave Ramsey", more that the Gospel of Christ, and are more concerned about saving for themselves than helping others with what God has given us. If we have 2 years savings in the bank we aren't really trusting in God to take care of our needs. We shouldn't be reckless either with our money. I just lean towards trusting in God a little more than Dave Ramsey teaches. But all in all, it's a good program, and his financial advice is at least as good as Suze Orman, who I think really great things about.
But if your church or another church in SA is offering a class, you might want to check it out, it could help you with new ways to pinch pennies that you never thought about.
I'll look into it. I know one of our deacons has brought up startn a class on finances, but it's yet to happen. As far as havin 2 yrs savings in the bank goes,as long as you're tithing 10% I don't see how that would be a bad thing. I was watchin Joel Olsteen the other day and a... :)
I don't believe in giving 10%, the New Testament talks about giving sacrificially. If you're making 10 million per year, giving 1 million isn't exactly sacrificial. Personally, I'd have a hard time having $50,000 in my emergency fund and knowing that there are people who can't keep their lights on.
"Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:15-17
Where every Christian needs to be on this depends on each individual Christian. We need to live on faith that God will protect and take care of us. We need to save and invest so that we are not being irresponsible with what He has given us, and we need to use what he has given us wisely, so that we can help others around us. We can't just hope that the church will take the 10% we give and meet every need, because there are a lot of needs out there.
Yes, NT grace replaces the OT Law. However the Law is a guide for how we're supposed to live (if we allow the Spirit to lead us). Every believer should tithe, this is how the Church is able to do alot of its ministries. The OT says 10%. Personally, I agree w/ C.S. Lewis, give enough that it makes you feel uncomfortable.
"We can't just hope that the church will take the 10% we give and meet every need, because there are a lot of needs out there." Just how naive do you think I am?
As far as giving beyond this (or apart from this) I'd assume those whos faith is true would do this; whether it'd be time, money, ect.
B wants to make sure you know that he is a Wii bowling pro. I'm a 'not so Wii' bowling pro. :) But because we're weenies, we won't bowl with those Wii people anymore in fear we'll lose our illustrious status.
Are you throwin your 'stick to it tivness' in my face? That's alright...I'll admit I'm too big a wimp to risk it. It's PRO STATUS, man! You don't fool around with that!
Yes, look into that will ya? I'm ready for some serious Havic bum whoopin.
Ha..I raised the kiddos to say bum instead. Ya know..my sensitive ears and all.
Do you guys have Wii fit? I was talkin to a friend the other day and she was sayin it was really fun. You get the balance board and you can ski and do a labrynth type thing. (Remember the wooden board with holes and a marble and you had to turn the knobs on the sides to tilt the board and move the marble?)
Good on the Longhorns! "Oh how I hate Ohio State".
Btw...don't worry about watching WR. I have another recommendation in the queue for you. I just won't mention it (again) till you see the first. I actually would welcome a movie suggestion. C'mon...suggest one you think I should see and I'll rent it.
Oh forget the stupid movie. Now I'm really over it, cuz when it starts causin angst, you won't like it anyway.
I'm currently moderately fumin over Gunny G's post at TH which has turned into a "spoiled brat who's parents paid for college" thing. I don't get it. I thought we were supposed to save for our kids' school. Now it's this horrible act and we should want them to have student loans to pay off when they graduate?
I get the 'don't spoil em' thing. You know I get THAT. But my folks worked their tails off to help us through college, and I just thought that was part of our jobs as parents. I guess I'm confused.
I read the post. Tho, seems like tjat was just near the end and it was more about students gettin grades they shouldn't. Or was that Marsellis. I'm tired & can't remember now.
Mornin.. Alright, now B wants me to tell you that his bowling pro is his first Mii he made and his name is Ron. He no longer bowls w/ Ron, tho..he's switched to B. Ron'll play tennis, tho. (I guess it's been Ron who's been kickin my bum then.)
I'm not sure why he needs you to know these things. Funny thing was he kept talkin about his first Mii, "Jaun". I was this close to finally askin "you named your first Mii, Juan??" and I realized he was sayin Ron. :)
I don't necessarily think that parents should have to pay for kids school. If parents CAN pay for it, and kids deserve it, I would pay for it. I think I'd be more interested in a system (if I had the money) where I paid off the student loans, at a public school, every semester that the kids got straight A's. If they got a B, I'd pay 80% of that class, a C, 50% or less. Something along those lines anyway. If they wanted to go to a private school, I'd pay the public school cost, but they'd have to make up the difference. I'd also consider the possibility of giving them the money after they graduate. These are ideas, but I don't think kids should ever believe that it is their right for their parents to pay for their college tuition. It is definitely a privlege in my opinion. But everything comes down to personal preference. But in the end if you scare them into thinking you may not pay the full tab, they'd probably be more likely to go after scholarships. In the end, if I had the money, I might turn out to be a softie, but I'd like to think I'd make 'em earn it.
Reck, I think we agree on this without realizing it. When I say giving sacrificially, it is essentially saying that it's giving enough that it makes you uncomfortable. If Bill Gates gave $100,000 to church it would make a huge difference, but that doesn't even touch him. That's like the average person going to Starbucks to get the $2 coffee. I don't feel like a particular number should be put on giving. We give enough that it is sacrificial. I'd like to be able to give a lot more, but we give enough that it hurts a little. I just think that giving to God doesn't just add up to giving to church. It's charities, the homeless, and friends and family (and even strangers) who've fallen on hard times, and need a hand, in addition to giving to church. But honestly, I think we're in agreement on these issues, but I think I haven't been wording it the right way.
At any rate, I think the whole thing that started this was your penny pinching, (which we have been doing more of) and the whole Dave Ramsey thing. I think it's a good program that focuses on using biblical principles to save, invest, give and pay off debt. Anyway, have a great day.
No, I agree N, parents don't have to and kids shouldn't expect it. What sparked me was a comment from a gal who has a daughter and when she was gettin ready to go to college, her dad (the commenter's ex) offered to pay and the daughter said no, "based on principle". And then went on to say her daughter is now a conservative. The whole thing was a little 'right wing wacko' for my taste. That site generally is but I go there for some healthy eye-rolling. I'm over it.
I hear ya Nest. I do think we agree here. I was just havin a rough day yesterday and am sorry that I came off alittle combative (ie. the "naive" statement). Turnin over everything to God IS the most important thing; it trumps all else.
Nestor - > ... Glenn's (StanNote: "Bleck's" (tm)) new book is really good. Even if you don't believe in God or Christmas, you can get something out of it. ...
That's right Stan, you could be brainwashed into loving your family more, and believing that life is more valuable than we give credit to. Just stay in your box Stan, stay in your box.

51? Geez are you guys o.k?
We're managin.
Ohhhh.....k, was thinkin that was alittle on the chilly side. But, 4.6...yeah..that's bearable.
Goin through a Redbox delima right now. Can't find one around here that is currently workin to take back our rentals. Must be the cold weather.

Hey, every little bit counts...
Blockbuster just got obscenely expensive. 5 bucks? The thing is, I can On Demand for 5 bucks and I don't have to brave the elements. I used to have the bb online thing, but I wasn't watchin em fast enough to justify the monthly payment, so I cancelled it. Of course within a couple months, I went on a movie kick, so I woulda made the money back had I stuck with it.
Speakin of movies, how'd ya like Whale Rider?
It was a thrill a minute. really, few movies have impacted me as much. I'd try to explain it, but I'd hate to ruin it for anyone else that might be readin this.
yeah, BB got crazy expensive. And the gm rentals, 8 bucks! from now on the kiddos have to rent gm w/ their own funds.

I will aspire to be as tightwaddish as you, Yoda.
That's a tough deal. I'm sure it'll get better soon.

Why'd ya wait till the last minute for the camp thing?
I think camp would be good for him, alittle pressure release from the whole big bro thing. Not so sure about overnite tho; course I'm me.
I handled the 9 thing smoothly, cept for writin 12 in the month spot.
No, my kids are conformers, ya know, like me ;)

Once a polygamist, always a polygamist.

GN Sis!
Linda,
I don't necessarily think that parents should have to pay for kids school.
The Ronster, eh?
We'll hafta go wi fi cause Hurley wants to battle it out w/ Juan.
Ha! Hurley and Juan...
Today B said his goal after school is to make an Obi Wan Mii. (We already have a stormtrooper.)Nuts..they're all nuts. Everyone but me I tell ya...
I hear ya Nest. I do think we agree here. I was just havin a rough day yesterday and am sorry that I came off alittle combative (ie. the "naive" statement). Turnin over everything to God IS the most important thing; it trumps all else.
The Force will be w/ B...always.

Yeah. You could get brainwashed.
That's right Stan, you could be brainwashed into loving your family more, and believing that life is more valuable than we give credit to. Just stay in your box Stan, stay in your box.
